IDP Waiver Wire: Week Eleven

November 17, 2009
By Gary Davenport

PICKUP OF THE WEEK

Jonathan Fanene - DE, Cincinnati Bengals

The 5th year pro entered Cincinnati’s starting lineup after Antwan Odom’s season-ending injury, and while his first start was not an auspicious one (he failed to record any stats) Fanene has improved steadily since then and had a very solid stat line in Sunday’s victory over the Steelers, posting 6 tackles, 2 sacks, and a pass defensed. As injuries deplete the already shallow talent pool at DL fantasy owners are well advised to stay abreast of any intriguing pickups that can be made at the position, and Fanene’s availablity in most leagues makes him the cream of that crop this week.

Charles Johnson - DL, Carolina Panthers

Johnson got his first start of 2009 last week against Atlanta due to the hand injury suffered by Julius Peppers the week before, and while his 5 tackle, 3 solo performance isn’t eye-popping Johnson has shown flashes of talent in the past and has amassed three sacks and two forced fumbles in limited duty this year. Peppers appeared severely limited by the cast on his hand, and these limitations should equate to added playing time for Johnson, which in turn should equate to additional opportunities and IDP production for owners scouring the wire for DL help.

Charlie Anderson - OLB, Miami Dolphins

Anderson got the start for Miami over Joey Porter Sunday, who has been a disappointment on the field and has now apparently run afoul of the Dolphins’ coaching staff off of it. Anderson responded by notching 6 tackles, a sack, and forcing two fumbles, and while Porter returned to practice Monday the play of Anderson and rookie Cameron Wake may well leave the ‘Fins in no hurry to insert him back into the lineup, so owners in need of LB help may want to give the former Rebel a look.

Chinedum Ndukwe - SS, Cincinnati Bengals

Roy Williams (the safety, not the wideout) landed on IR last week, handing the starting job at SS in the Queen City to “Doom” for the remainder of the 2009 season. Ndukwe has averaged nearly 7 tackles a contest in his 5 starts this year, has displayed a knack for making big plays in 2+ seasons in Cincy, and any time an every-down strong safety with his potential to produce is available on the WW this late in the season it behooves IDP owners to take a hard look at him.
